Worcester Rally Unites Community Against Hate & Racism

Amid growing concern over the UK Home Office’s proposed immigration legislation, a powerful rally was held at the Methodist Church in Worcester under the banner “Unite West Midlands – One Region, One People”, organised by local trade unions. The event brought together organisations dedicated to human rights and refugee support, sending a clear message of solidarity and inclusion.

Speakers at the rally strongly condemned the proposed laws, describing them as a divisive attempt to marginalise refugees and create barriers based on colour and ethnicity. They emphasised that Worcestershire has a proud tradition of welcoming newcomers and that refugees are an integral part of the community.

“We cannot allow legislation to fragment our society,” said one speaker, urging lawmakers to reconsider the proposals. “These measures risk fuelling racism and hostility, undermining the values of equality and unity that define our region.”

Among the prominent voices was Ros Gowers, coordinator of Evesham Vale Welcomes Refugees, a charity that has supported refugees locally for seven years. The group is part of Worcestershire Welcomes Refugees, a network of seven organisations working across the county.

Ros explained the purpose of the rally: “We wanted to bring like-minded people together to challenge the rising hostility towards newcomers, driven by far-right rhetoric. This event shows that the majority of our society welcomes refugees and values their contribution.”

She stressed that this is the beginning of a wider movement to involve the public in expressing solidarity and changing the narrative. Future events are planned to strengthen advocacy for refugee rights and counter misinformation.

The rally featured performances by musicians and poets from diverse backgrounds, symbolising unity and cultural richness. Attendees praised the artistic contributions, which reinforced the message that inclusivity makes communities stronger.

Hillary Cross, representing Worcestershire Stands Against Racism and the local trade union, voiced concern over the growing influence of far-right groups:
“This agenda divides society and targets vulnerable communities. Refugees are not responsible for poverty or crises. We must confront these narratives and uphold our tradition of standing against racism.”

The event concluded with a renewed commitment to challenge disinformation and advocate for fair, humane policies. Organisers vowed to continue holding rallies to ensure Worcestershire remains a welcoming place for all.
